Global Maritime India Summit 2023

Anglo-Eastern was thrilled to be a part of this year’s Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) in Mumbai. Now in its third year, the three-day flagship affair (October 17-19) is India’s premier maritime industry event, led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, with full backing from the central government as a platform for promoting global and regional partnerships as well as facilitating investments.

Our Mumbai team made sure Anglo-Eastern’s presence did not go unnoticed, with an award-winning booth at D-44 that captivatingly showcased our services and thought leadership in the areas of sustainable crewing, optimisation, decarbonisation, and digitalisation.

Over the course of the three days, we had the honour of being visited by many of India’s top names in shipping, notably Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Tourism and Ports, Shipping and Waterways; T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; and Shyam Jagannathan, Directorate General of Shipping.

Anglo-Eastern also enjoyed a presence at the summit’s “Focus on Maritime Safety and Security” session, which featured group director of operations Capt. Swapnodeep Mondal as one of the key speakers. His talk focused on fleet optimisation and how this can contribute to maritime safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

Though optimisation tools are the enablers, it is the people who use them to make the right decisions that make the difference, he was keen to emphasise, hence the importance of excellent seamanship and training. Capt. Mondal went on to share the following in-house metrics that highlight the tangible impact of fleet optimisation and crew behavioural changes:

  • By reducing fuel consumption through optimisation efforts, Anglo-Eastern was able to save 50,000 MT in bunkers last year, equal to 150,000 MT in reduced CO2 emissions and USD 32 million in cost savings.
  • Proper usage of fleet optimisation tools can dramatically cut the time required for such critical tasks as passage planning by up to 70%, allowing the crew to focus on other key areas that can assist with overall efficiency and safety.
  • Voyage plans prepared using
  • our fleet optimisation tools are accepted 98% of the time, without any amendments. By providing the crew with optimised voyage plans that align with their specific requirements, we are able to streamline operations and minimise potential errors and delays.
  • Our voyage optimisation efforts have led to an average reduction in vessel speed by 0.4 knots per voyage. While seemingly small, the impact on carbon and cost reductions is substantial in light of the fact our managed vessels perform 25,000+ voyages every year.
  • We have benchmarked the passages of our managed fleet across various vessel types, sizes, drafts, and information via traditional nautical publications versus modern AIS-based vessel traffic visualisation tools, and have reached out to hydrographic offices to recommend updates for the benefit of the entire global shipping community and decarbonisation efforts.

On the last day, the Maritime Excellence Achievers award ceremony was held to recognise industry best practices that demonstrate leadership and innovation in the transformation of India’s maritime industry. Once again, Anglo-Eastern shared in the limelight, being honoured with two awards: one for Maritime Excellence in Global ESG Initiatives, and the other as a best booth winner.

More than that, it was a privilege to be a part of the energy and excitement of GMIS 2023, which brought to life its tagline of “Connect, Collaborate, Create” on a grand scale, which we look forward to taking part in again next year.
