The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) Batch 30 Passing Out Parade (POP) took place on 27 June at Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA). The event was graced by Mr. Mark Cameron, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Ardmore Shipping, also the Chief Guest of the event; his wife, Mrs. Nina Cameron; and Mr. Robert Gaina, Senior Vice President, Commercial at Ardmore Shipping, who was also the Guest of Honour.
The event also witnessed the presence of Capt. Yadu Bassi, Marine Personnel Manager of Ardmore’s Singapore office; Capt. Aalok Sharma, Group Director, Training of Anglo-Eastern; Mr. Tejinder Bhamra, Principal of AEMA; Capt. Ashish Malik, Managing Director of Anglo Ardmore Ship Management; Mr. Francis Akkara, Principal and Director of Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC); and Capt. Danish Joseph, an AEMA alumnus from DNS Batch 1 and the former Master of Federal Clyde – the first ever vessel fully manned by officer graduates from AEMA.
Principal Bhamra warmly congratulated the graduating batch and thanked the dignitaries for being a part of the celebration. He spoke about Ardmore’s strong focus on operational excellence and their genuine interest in nurturing talent, and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the bursary programme introduced by Ardmore, which offers financial support to deserving cadets, a gesture that speaks volumes about Ardmore’s commitment to young seafarers.
Mr. Cameron delivered a valuable message on professionalism, maintaining a positive and lively outlook on life, and the importance of staying inquisitive. He encouraged cadets to never stop asking questions, to learn from mistakes, and to embrace vulnerability as a strength. “Skills can be taught,” he said, “but attitude and self-motivation are what truly set professionals apart.” Mr. Cameron closed by celebrating the cadets’ dedication and reminding them that they’re joining a proud maritime tradition. “As merchant navy officers, you are about to play a vital role in keeping global trade and the world moving,” said Mr. Cameron.
Drawing a comparison between shipping in his time and the present, Mr. Gaina praised AEMA for equipping young cadets with robust knowledge and practical insight into the maritime industry. He emphasised that this preparation positions the cadets for a successful seafaring career and encouraged them to take full advantage of the training provided. Appreciating the competence of Indian seafarers, he reminded the young audience that the responsibility of upholding India’s maritime reputation now rests with them and encouraged them to keep the flag flying high.
In the prize distribution session, Cadet Ayush Lohar was awarded the Best Overall Cadet, while Cadet Ishaan Sharma was recognised as the Academic Topper.
A tree plantation ceremony was conducted by the Ardmore dignitaries – a tradition symbolising both the promotion of green energy and environmental consciousness, as well as serving as a lasting mark of remembrance at AEMA. The academy introduced a new practice of inviting guests to name the saplings they plant. Mrs. Cameron named hers “Seaventure”.
Mr. Cameron left a parting note: “A fantastic and professional ceremony, and an outstanding environment at AEMA. Well done, and best of luck!”
Congratulations to our graduates. We wish you the utmost success as you embark on your careers at sea.
