“We don’t innovate for the sake of technology. We innovate for the sake of our people and to make their work safer, their decisions smarter, and their potential limitless.” Swapnodeep Mondal, Group Managing Director of Operations and Shared Services, shares some of the latest innovations being evaluated across our fleet.
Anti-Jamming/Anti-Spoofing (AJ/AS) systems
In an era of increasing digital vulnerability, the integrity of a vessel’s navigation system is non-negotiable. The maritime industry faces growing threats from GPS “jamming” and “spoofing” which can cause loss of position data or, more dangerously, deceive a vessel’s systems with false location signals.
Following a comprehensive evaluation of next-generation navigational aids, we have identified and selected IMO type-approved Anti-Jamming and Anti-Spoofing (AJ/AS) systems. This technology represents the new frontier of navigational security, working to intelligently analyse the integrity of all incoming satellite signals in real-time. If an attack is detected, the system instantly alerts the bridge and, most critically, isolates the compromised signals to maintain an accurate position.
Key benefits:
- Enhanced navigational safety: By guaranteeing the accuracy of the vessel’s position even under attack, the system gives our crews the confidence to navigate safely in all conditions, particularly in high-risk areas.
- Improved operational reliability: This technology protects against disruptions, delays, and risks caused by navigational errors, ensuring the precise and on-schedule passage of vessels.
- Proactive risk management: Equipping our fleet with this equipment addresses modern maritime threats and to maintain the highest standards of operational security and safety.
Personal locator vests
The designed vest with an integrated transponder is intended to be worn over boiler suits by all staff working on deck. Upon activation, a GPS position will be transmitted, enabling the bridge team to pinpoint the person’s location in the water for a swift and targeted recovery.
Key features:
- Dual activation system: The transponder can be triggered manually or will activate automatically within five seconds of immersion in seawater, ensuring a distress signal is sent without delay.
- Optimised ergonomic design: Based on crew feedback, the GPS antenna is positioned high above the shoulder to maximise signal transmission, even in adverse sea states.
Key benefits:
- Dramatically improved recovery time: Providing an immediate and precise location, the vest drastically reduces the search area and time required in an MOB situation.
- Enhanced emergency response: The instant alert allows the bridge team and shore staff to initiate emergency procedures immediately for a more coordinated and effective response.
Smart firefighting helmet
The Smart Helmet is an integrated command and control asset designed to give our firefighters a critical advantage in the most challenging conditions. This helmet features a built-in thermal imaging camera that projects a real-time thermal view onto the firefighter’s near-field display, allowing the wearer to see through dense smoke, identify heat sources, locate the fire source and any missing individuals.
Key features:
- Integrated thermal imaging: Allows firefighters to see heat signatures and potential hazards through smoke, enabling them to navigate more safely and locate casualties.
- Live video transmission: An integrated 4K camera can transmit a live video feed from the lead firefighter’s perspective directly to the vessel’s command team, provided a Wi-Fi connection is available.
- Certified and durable construction: The helmet is fully certified to international firefighting standards (EN 443, EN 16471, EN 16473) with an ATEX-certified camera module for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
- Ergonomic and functional design: Features full adjustability and integrated sockets for SCBA masks and flashlights, ensuring it works seamlessly with other critical firefighting equipment.
Key benefits:
- Enhanced firefighter safety: Enables firefighters to navigate more safely, avoid flashovers, and maintain better awareness of their surroundings, drastically reducing personal risk.
- Improved command and control: The live video feed gives the command team an invaluable “eyes-on” view of the situation, leading to better-informed strategic decisions.
- More effective search and rescue: The thermal imaging capability is critical in low-visibility conditions, making it faster and more effective to locate any trapped personnel.
- Advanced post-incident analysis: The option to record video provides powerful material for training and post-drill analysis, allowing our teams to continuously improve.
