Foresights | The quest for net-zero: IMO’s bold steps toward a greener maritime future

In continuation of the IMO’s revised decarbonisation strategy of 2023 and its aim to achieve net-zero (NZ) emissions by 2050, the 83rd session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83), held in April 2025, introduced pivotal regulatory changes as a part of the mid-term measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping. Along with introducing unique challenges for ship owners, charterers and managers, these changes are set to significantly reshape the maritime sector, accelerating towards the NZ target.
This issue of Foresights explores the key outcomes of MEPC 83 concerning GHG emissions, their implications for the shipping industry, and the role of Anglo-Eastern in assisting shipowners in complying with decarbonisation targets.
